As the United States devoted all its attention to WWII munitions, automotive production for the domestic market fell to all-time lows. Wooden bodies were re-deployed as a substitute for precious sheet metal needed for war supplies. To help lighten the weight of a wooded body cars, padded leather roofs were used. After the war, these wooden bodied station wagons found new life as surf vehicles.
